This blog is all about my mathematics world. Shall start to share my thoughts again this year. I have the feeling that this will be the year that ideas will flow and my creativity will shine (Amen)
There are few concerns related to Malaysian education scenarios that currently are brewing in my head.
1. Autonomy of selected universities. UTM & USM are two lucky universities.
2. Use of english in math and science teaching (yes! this issue has not finalized/settled down)
3. Trainee teacher from various universities are still not employed despite many schools are facing shortage of teachers..
4. Quality of our students

Shall stop here. Lets us hope the government is transparent and are quick to solve them.
Aishahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01571997619253156850noreply@blogger.com15tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4096188862792619444.post-12171154068909958972010-12-25T10:22:00.001+08:002010-12-25T10:27:28.101+08:00PMR result

Yesterday PMR result was announced.
Congratulations to all students who deservingly scored straight As. Almost half a million students took PMR with almost 30 thou getting straight As...The sweet smell of success can be intoxicating. Well done!!

However I am still searching for the actual figures. Where are the actual statistics ? The media seems to be only reporting the achievement of 7% of the population .. Yes we are indeed proud to see the increase..

But we also want to know about the rest of the students. The other 93%.!! Give us fair statistics.
Majority (the norm) of the populations should be of our main concern. These are the students that will enter high secondary school. We also want to know how many students only manage to get all Cs..Ds..ie non performing students. Is there an increase or decrease?
What is the figure? the issues here is about access and equity to educations? Are majority of our students within the acceptable level of achievement? Can we proudly say that yes we have successfully educate our youngsters to prepare them well for challenging future ahead...

Shall discuss about this once i got the actual statistics. Aishahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01571997619253156850noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4096188862792619444.post-67637998777366679062010-11-16T13:50:00.001+08:002010-12-24T17:44:50.145+08:00why students fail mathematics? At last some..free time to write..My apology for not being able to write sooner....
Finally i manage to finish marking the exam papers.. marks are all settled and done. With that out of the way now i suddenly feel the urge to share my thoughts about this particular topic.

I am going to discuss why students fail mathematics.. however mathematics failure and 'general failure' is interlinked and seperating the two may not be a good idea.. that is another broad topic which i shall avoid!
(...)

People DONT LIKE TO TALK ABOUT FAILURE.. .wipe it under the carpet or ignore it..or worst pretend that it does not happens! Human nature do not like to hear negative things about themselves. Hwever no matter how hard it is to face the truth..we ought not to ignore it.Learn to face failure head on ..beleive me that is the only this way can we save more failures in the future..

SO why fail??
Generally ATTITUDE is the no 1 reason - there are many type of students that i have met ??

a. the lazy students-not much can be said about this type other than they ought to set their mind what exactly is they seek in their life..
b. the hardworking students- hey hardworking students fail too?? not fair isnt it? these students usually try to memorize everything...their mind is focusing on a frame of thinking that can become so rigid..the fixation problem actually slowly robbing the mind of the actual thinking or creative processes associated with learning....
c. the worrier type of student- this students worry and have a low confidence in their ability..hence they focus on the wrong thing..unable to stay focus on major ideas. .,their ideas are scattered and remains on the surface..

d. the smart and comfortable student- this type of students are not necessarily the brightest in the class. Neither are they the cleverest..the most improtant attribute is being comfortble with themselves and always asking questions when occassion arises. They study smart, ask the questions most of the tim no matter how silly they look sometimes. Success comes easily to this group of students.

So where are you??
Let me share some of the important rules in successful learning of mathematics.

RULE 1: Know yourselves..work on your weakness and decide what you want. Steer your life towards that. Do not allow your attitude wreck your life..work on that ..say NO to negative habits and create new ones..

RULE 2: Learning from failure - Einstein fail his math class !!so whats the big deal? let failure become the teacher to you. Question yourself why you have failed. find reasons..use that as a means towards learning better skills to overcome failure the next time..treat failure as valuable learning experiences

RULE 3: Learn not to be sensitive to critism. Developed 'thick skin' when it comes to learning. Ask and think hard..ask again ..keep on trying till you get it right!! then do the exercises yourself. when you got stuck ..always ask the right person. Aishahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01571997619253156850noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4096188862792619444.post-26346472240350574162010-08-23T11:42:00.003+08:002010-12-24T17:51:02.179+08:00Learning mathematics..what does it take? What does it takes to excell in mathematics..?
Most people would equate mathematics with intelligence.

Proffessor Schwartz says students actually need PAC-- Perseverance, Attitude and Courage to learn mathematics successfully.

I personally felt that students also need flexibility of taughts when solving mathematics problems. Rigidity hinders ones ability and creativity. it is actuallay the number one enemy in mathematics!!
Too often students get mess up with mathematical symbolism and this can becomes frustrating experiences.

"In symbols there are concealment yet revelations" a saying by Pimms (British educator) Aishahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01571997619253156850noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4096188862792619444.post-70770436118264757932010-08-10T10:50:00.001+08:002010-08-10T18:06:18.381+08:00Ramadhan is here again..Salam Ramadhan Al Mubarak..

The report highlighted researches (very briefly...) finding on:
1. Urban and rural disparities
2. Implementation of PPSMI
3. TIMMS result -
4. Current education and policy

What I find disturbing is that, despite almost 50 years of independence we are still looking out to other countries and trying to figure out what to do with our own education systems....

Despite huge amount of budget allocated in technology integrations, technology remains a little adopted in most Malaysian schools..We must realise that technology do not guarantee quality learning can occur, what is more important is how technology is adopted by teachers.
With rigid curricullum this is not easy to implement.
Training good teachers to do the job specifically in rural areas remains as a big problems..while exam orientated learning trend among schools are not getting any better.

I also find it disturbing that so many malaysian studies consistently try to compare betweeen Malay and Non malay students (logically, can we put Indian /Chinese in same group..?? i dont think so) or national school vs chinese schools..comparing for achievement. This is basically like trying to compare apple and oranges..!
Comparison must be fair..majority of malay students or national schools are in located in rural areas..similalry with indian schools..

Anyway why compare..what are this studies trying to conclude? In national school teachers factors remains a big problem (I know that many national school teachers who are trained to teach Bahasa but ends up teaching mathematics and sciences..so what kind of output can we expect? what about extra classes..?.. There are so many factors should be considered...Once and for all lets stop these type of studies..Yes may be are differences among different ethnicity/regions, but most important is that only those who hunger for success and are motivated enough will excell, while those with no appetite for knowledge will continue to be left behind.

So why not focus our time and money on more beneficial work such as motivating students and finding ways to improve each schools?? Aishahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01571997619253156850noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4096188862792619444.post-39893786904011502772010-04-07T12:14:00.001+08:002010-04-14T12:00:37.641+08:00Matematik HuluanPertama kali mendengar istilah Matematik Huluan (upstream mathematical research).

Apa bezanya dengan ethnomatematik? Menurut Dr Adi Setia Institut Penyelidikan Matemtaik UM.
Contohnya kajian membabitkan: 1. Model Penggunaan wang dinar
2. Model matematik sistem wakaf
3. Kosmologi Islam
4. Sejarah Matematik melayu islam

Bertentangan (bukannya Lawan) ialah "matematik Hiliran' (downstream research). Menurutnya lagi,

What influences these extreme feeling that diffferent individues experiences? Is it true that only certain type people are good at mathematics..? Are those people who are good in mathematics gifted? So what has gone wrong for people who are always hopelessly confuse with simple mathematicsl ideas?

Students who like mathematics enjoy the challenge and likes to dwell on its symbols and ideas. I used to get thrilled when i could solve all exercises or homework given. The achievement of getting good marks in mathematics somehow eventually becomes ones status quo in school...closely guided so that no one can beat you! Those that lag behind usually never catches up and ends up as freak in maths...

Teachers factors to me is another important variable.. a good teacher explain asbtract concept well and clearly, while some may just grapple with the ideas leaving lots of confusing ideas among the students..drillling students with endless exercises is not the solution to mastery of mathematical ideas for this mechanical actions can be very damaging to students long term learning..the difficulities with conceptual teaching is students usually can be irritatingly impatient and want a quick way out..hence they normally are more interested in what shall be assessed!Test..Exam! included in test or not..? these are questions that can be annoying.

In secondary school i have this great math teacher, Encik Ismail. He explains well and kept challenging us with various questions that he expected we are able to do once he briefly explain the main concepts.. we were so nervous when he started picking on students to finish the exercise on board..but then again he would smile at us when we successfully solved the questions. He was always there even in the afternoon to help us out.. you were one Great Teacher.

I took extra classes for my additional mathematics once a week in form five to prepare for my SPM. Another Malay male teacher from another school taught me.Cant remember his name now. He was so enthuasistic that it catches on us. . I met him last year..wearing kupiah and sarung. AT the age of sixty he is still teaching mathematics..in his own tuition class..wow..He was beeming widely when i approach him and say -Thank you sir for the knowledge that you have imparted to me so sincerely and so well.
I will always remember them.May God Bless Them. In PME news letter 34(nov 2009): He raised the following issues:

"Blind spot" in Mathematics education is ME redistributes wealth to the rich; we focus more on the curriculum – but curriculum itself is a political entity (Apple,1979). We focus on teaching strategies – but teaching is a political act...
According to him, we avoid politics not because it is a dirty word, but because too many of us have too much to lose. He claim that we are after all successes of the status quo, and unbalancing that by asking too many difficult questions threatens to unbalance us....

Street mathematics, workplace learning, situated cognition, activity theory have all played a part in our field– raised in my article on equity and social justice in the recent PME handbook (Gates, 2006).

Cynthia Nicol (2002) raises that mathematics teachers just do not know what goes on outside the school gates. Too many mathematics teachers do not understand where mathematics is actually used and what it is used for. Mathematics is used as a tool to solve problems of course, but it is also used as a social filter – “a badge of eligibility for the privileges of society” (Atweh, Bleicher and Cooper, 1998, 63).

Gates also asked ME to put more focus on different settings, to embrace difference, and try to see things differently. But most importantly, to try to see how is our contribution to inequity and injustice, because you can’t take a neutral position.
Lots of stuff to think about there..!!How can we relate these to Malaysian edu scenario??? Aishahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01571997619253156850noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4096188862792619444.post-71376565300215856012009-11-16T18:13:00.010+08:002010-09-15T12:11:41.906+08:00Good Mathematics resources site1. While i have my own opinion (I have 2 daughters in primary school and 1 in secondary school)related to this issue, i shall only put forth Some of the research related papers that have been published:

Recall the following statement released by the Jemaah Nazir (School inspectoriat)

"Dasar ini digubal berasaskan hakikat bahawa Sains dan Matematik adalah bidang ilmu yang sangat dinamik dengan pelbagai penemuan baru dan sebahagian besar maklumat yang berkaitan dengannya terdapat dalam bahasa Inggeris. However, how far do the changes affect the teachers is the issue addressed in the paper. In fact the objectives of the study were to investigate the reaction of the mathematic and science teachers to using English as the medium of instruction, the problems encountered by these teachers in using English in the classroom and the availability of language support systems. A study was conducted on a group of pre-university educators in the northern part of Malaysia who have undergone language enhancement courses known as English for the Teaching of Mathematics and Science (ETeMS). The study reveals that teachers of mathematics and science are generally perceptive of the change in the medium of instruction but needing some sustainable measures to not only improve their language ability and delivery. Thus it is hope that certain measures would be taken to address on teachers struggle to ensure the success of the policy.

2. Aziz Nordin, eprint-utm.my, Students perception of teaching and learning of mathemtics in englishAbstract
Students use language to communicate and to understand mathematics concepts. Language
influences students’ thought by molding perception and structuring ideas. However, in recentyears, science and mathematics in lower secondary subjects have been taught in English. This may create problems in learning these subjects. Therefore, this research was carried outto gather information and to get the clearer picture on what have happened regarding theteaching and learning science and mathematics in schools. The research instrument was a setof 16-item questionnaire that was designed to identify students’ perception on teaching andlearning mathematics. The respondents consist of 279 lower secondary school students fromthree schools in rural area of Johor, Malaysia. The research found out that the respondents agreed to the importance of English Language in everyday life as well as career opportunity
but felt that learning science and mathematics was very difficult and demanding due to the lack of ability in understanding the subject matters and instructional language. The result showed that learning science is more difficult than mathematics. Finally, there arechallenges for the science and mathematics teachers to overcome students’ learning difficulties andto promote effective learning among students.

3. Many were taught in Malay and trained to teach in Malay. Many too have little experience of using ICT in their teaching. To ease the problem with regard to the language and ICT, the Ministry of Education has introduced several meaningful programs aimed at preparing the teachers and boosting their confidence in teaching the subjects. A research involving 575 teachers was conducted throughout the country to examine the effectiveness of the programs organized by theministry and togauge whether of not the trainings given were adequate and relevant to the needs of the teachers to teach
the subjects in English. Questionnaires, which comprised of structured items to elicit information with respect to facts, perception, opinion and attitudes of the respondents towards PPSMI were administered to the teachers. The findings reveal that the implementation of the teaching of Mathematics in English in schools was at satisfactory level (53.4%). The respondents also agreed that they have improved their command of the English language and that their level of confidence to teach Mathematics in English have also improved. Finally, recommendations for further study were suggested so as to further improve the teaching of Mathematics in English

4. Hen Tan & Chan Swee Heng, Teaching math and science in english: Perspective from UPM(2003) www.eltcm.org/eltc/Download/conferences/8_parallelpaper_08
Abstract
Preparing teachers to teach Mathematics and Science in English is a responsibility that cuts across many institutions and agencies. Universiti Putra Malaysia(UPM) is one such institution given the responsibility of equipping the Mathematics and Science Trainee Teachers (MSTTs) with the skills of using English to teach both subjects. The UPM teacher training programme for this purpose is jointly conducted by the Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies with the education component provided by the Faculty of Educational Studies. The Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication is entrusted with the role of designing and implementing intensive English courses for the MSTTs to teach in English. This paper discusses issues and concerns about the effort involved in equipping MSTTs at UPM with the necessary English Language skills so that teaching along the stated objectives is achieved. It also elaborates on the profile of these MSTTs which includes their perceptions on the use of English for the teaching of mathematics and science. The paper invites discussion on the directions that tertiary institutions could embark on to fulfill the MSTTs’ language needs.

5.Ong Saw Lan & May TAN, Jurnal Pendidik dan Pendidikan,Jilid 23 (2008)(usm) Mathematics in English-Teachers experinces in the classroom
Abstract: In 2003, the Malaysian government implemented a new policy in the national education system; English is made the language of instruction in schools for the teaching of Mathematics, Science and technology subjects. These subjects had formerly been taught in the Malay language. The purpose of teaching Science and Mathematics in English is to enable students to acquire proficiency in English while learning the content. This study aims to provide more in-depth information concerning teachers’ experiences and classroom practices in the implementation of the change in language of instruction for Mathematics and Science. To gather information on teachers’ experiences with the policy change, classroom observation and semi-structured interviews were conducted with the four Mathematics and Science teachers. While teachers interviewed are supportive of the policy, they are still struggling with the realities of implementing this policy. Three factors appear to be salient in influencing how quickly a teacher can effect the transition into teaching entirely in English. They are the prior educational background of teachers, the linguistic environment in school and the linguistic abilities of their students.

6.Cheah,(2008) Refining communication to improve didactics: A case study , (Recsam).
Abstract
This paper presents a preliminary report of a case study on a lesson conducted as part of a project to introduce the Lesson Study approach to a group of teachers. The lesson which was planned collaboratively by three teachers to focus on mathematical communication and thinking was then carried out by one of the teachers. The lesson was videotaped and the communication that took place was then transcribed and interpretively analysed. The findings of the study revealed that the lesson tasks designed by the teachers were generally able to stimulate active pupil participation in the lesson. However the communication in the lesson was mostly focused on the teacher attempting to lead the pupils to arrive at his answers. While the study did raise some issues as to the way mathematical communication is carried out in the Malaysian primary classroom, it was found that the Lesson Study method was a suitable and non-threatening approach for teachers to improve and further develop mathematical communication in the classroom

7.Imran Ho ABdullah & Muhammad Yahya,FACING UP TO TEACHING AND LEARNING OF SCIENCE
AND MATHEMATICS IN ENGLISH AT UNIVERSITI KEBANGSAAN MALAYSIA Proceeding 11th. Annual International Conference ‘ Shaping the future of Science, Mathematics and Technical Education (2006). Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education,Brunei
Abstract
Malaysia has recently shifted the teaching of science and mathematics in English (SME). The implementation which began in 2003 has attracted a lot of debate and discussion. Not least, the fact that the national language has already been proven to be a successful language of higher education in the past 35 years. This paper presents findings from a study at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia to analyze students’ preference for the language of instruction in science and mathematics based programs and their language of group interaction. The paper also discusses the
issues in the implementation of SME including the wide difference in the English proficiency of students based on the Malaysian English University Test and the concerns of lecturers implementing SME. The paper concludes by asking whether there is a possible solution to the impasse of the nationalistic and globalist imperatives.

8.Nor Hashimah Jalaludin et.al,(2008) The Mastery of English Language among Lower SecondarySchool Students in Malaysia: A Linguistic Analysis, European Journal of Social Sciences – Volume 7, Number 2
Abstract
Teaching English language is a big challenge in this country. Students are still unable to acquire or even comprehend the language even after eleven years of learning the language at the primary and secondary levels. A study conducted on 315 Form Two students’ shows that the most obvious weaknesses of the students lay in the area of grammar, particularly in the aspects of morphology and syntax. Some of the problematic grammatical categories are affixes, adverbs, adjectives, plural forms, copula, subject-verb agreement. This contributes 60% of the total mistakes committed by the students. It is apparent that the attributing factor is the different grammatical structures between Malay and English. For example,Malay does not have morphological markers for adverbs (i.e. –ly) plurality (i.e. -s, es), superlative form for adjectives (i.e –er, -est) and these are some of the constraints the students face in learning the English language. Meanwhile, the different structure in syntax can be seen in relative pronouns, subject-verb agreement, copula and determiners, thus make the subject even more difficult to learn. Apart from the linguistics obstacles, the social surroundings such as attitude towards the language and the environment that do not encourage them to use the language have worsened the effort of acquiring the language. Aishahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01571997619253156850noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4096188862792619444.post-59230415046843988352009-11-12T09:04:00.010+08:002009-12-15T07:24:43.053+08:00Survey International Timms,PisaThere are several international comparative studies that have been carried out worldwide.
